Made in Malawi Gift Guide

As the festive season really gears up, you may still be thinking about gifts for the people you love. I’ve put together a list to help you find just the right items to get you in their good books, all available in Malawi. What better way to start off a conversation about your travels than with these items as talking points.

1. Zaluso Artwork, Lilongwe, from $30

A collective of young Malawian artists all based in the nation’s capital, Lilongwe came together to form Zaluso Arts. Zaluso means "talent', which they all have using different styles and media and there’s sure to be something among them that you like. You may even want to commission something special just for you. I love this take on traditional dances Gule Wamkulu by Akulu Lipenga and Neo Nyau series by Mbachi Lungu.

2. Amaravi Beauty, Blantyre, from $5

Amaravi (of Malawi) is based in Blantyre and available in specialty shops across the country. They use natural ingredients that are gentle on your skin to handcraft a product range from soaps, body butters and lip balm and insect repellent. We love their body butters, thick creamy and generous for your skin, and this orange and honey lip balm in their new environmentally friendly packaging.

3. Marie’s Hot Sauce, Blantyre, from $1

While in Malawi you must try our famous chilli, Kambuzi. A favorite among many Malawians, who keep a bowl full of the bright orange pepper close by and crush them into their food. Marie gifted us all with her special sauce and it's sure to be a hot topic at the dinner table for the food lover in your world.

4. Malawi Gin, Countrywide, from $5

What better way to bring you back to the beach? Malawi Gin and Tonic is a classic accompaniment to safaris, hikes or sundowners on the shores of Lake Malawi. Share a bottle with your faves.
